The film is a system of movements. It is dispersed among several scales and levels. The battleship, the opposing fleet, the city of Odessa, two sailors, a group of sailors, the entire ship's crew – the movement(s) of masses or social entities. Movement(s) of the natural world, including the ocean and waves, humans and worms, lips and faces, throats and breathes, and mists. Movements of artifacts, manufactured objects: the battleship's cannons, hanging tables in the dining room, and hammocks used by sailors for sleep among others. There are also movements of hybrid objects, such as a group of sailors and a tarpaulin, a ship and the boats approaching it, the sea and a ship, a pot and the boiling water inside it.
The way the movements blend together, flow into one another, and interconnect prevents the movie from having a clear protagonist or standout characters. In fact the only characters are kinemes, the moments of movement. The structure of the film is constituted by a montage of attractions. So goes the film theory. Let’s take the word attraction at its face value. What is the attraction? In a world without a center of gravity, without the immovable Prime Mover, where does motion originate? And what is it that attracts?
The source of motion is not there. And it is this very absence, nothingness, that moves. Because movement is restless, it catches masses, things, and forces. Jean-Luc Nancy explored the power of restlessness in Hegel's philosophy[1]. Hegelian subject emerges out of the power of negation, out of restlessness in relation to the given. The attraction that creates the subject arises out of nothing. From nothingness the subject derives its power insofar as the singular act of negation unfolds into a procession, a restless movement. Everything turns into nothing, nothing becomes everything.
Moving nothingness is the most concise definition of the subject. Because the subject moves, it exists. The movement of this subject is not caused by some mystical revelation, some supreme divine authority. This subject opposes stabilitas loci[2], constancy of place, attachment and binding.
What is the attraction? What is it that attracts? Nothing is the attraction and attracts. Nothingness gives rise to motion. The infinite and limitless aspect of nothingness draws us in. Everything originates from nothing. Therefore, the distinctions between humans and worms, or between a person and a ship, are meaningless. More accurately, the liberating power of nothingness overcomes these disparities. Unity arises from the restlessness of nothingness. Motion unites faces, tables, worms, ships, and waves.
It's only a sequence of flickering frames on the screen, just ghosts or fleeting kinemes. One could concede that none of it 'really' exists. You can use that as an excuse for taking a moment to rest. Maybe there is a benefit to individuality—or, as we say these days, personalization—in rest. Yet, the annoying idea is that being a person or an individual is separate from being a subject.
The paradox is that a film made for the purpose of propaganda for the revolution does the same thing at the level of its organisation as the troops shown in it shooting civilians. Just as the mechanically moving chain of soldiers erases and destroys everything individual and is indifferent to any individual manifestation of the human, so the film, thanks to its editing and structure, turns out to be a machine that erases every being and thing. The violence of which the film speaks is, as it were, doubled by its structure. Thus, we see how the power of the negative movement is neutral to any ideological message, be it for or against revolution. The proletarian revolution turns out to be just another moment in the endless becoming of the restless violence.
Is non-violent creation ever possible?

перебор ключей первым шло то, что ничего не значило

летом приторным
заправив зрачки горизонтом настраивал резкость
говорить не ставя точки, эту манеру телеведущего государственных похорон мы теперь называем трагедией
